The National Portuguese Examination was developed by members of the AATSP Projects and Development Committee (2002). It is intended as a motivational, extracurricular activity and contest for students of members of the Association and its chapters. The NPE is not designed for any other purpose and should not be used for assessment, placement, or proficiency testing. The NPE is a proficiency-based, communicative exam. It will engage the students in reading, speaking, and writing. Currently there are four different levels of the examinations: Level I, II, III, IV. These are intended for pre-college students of Portuguese.

CELPE-Bras
Portuguese as a Foreign Language Proficiency Exam
In October 2006, the University of Florida, Gainesville, became an official testing site for the Celpe-Bras, the official Portuguese as a Foreign Language Proficiency Exam established by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC). The Celpe-Bras is a necessary requirement for admission of international students to Brazilian universities, and it is also widely accepted internationally as proof of Portuguese language competence. The exam consists of an intensive written part, including both oral and reading comprehension, and an oral part in which test-takers are interviewed individually by a Portuguese professor trained as an evaluator for the exam. The MEC grants certificates for the following levels of proficiency: intermediate, superior intermediate, advanced, and superior advanced. Currently, UF, Florida International University, and Harvard University are the sole authorized Celpe-Bras testing locations in the United States. The test is administered twice annually, in October and April. Those interested in taking the exam should contact Mary Risner at mrisner@latam.ufl.edu.
